Prevacid Otc
Prevacid whose generic name is Lanzoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor. It is the only Proton Pump Inhibitor which has been approved by the FDA which is available over the counter in America. It is marketed by Novartis as over the counter since 2009. The dose of Prevacid which is available as over the counter drug is Prevacid 24hr 15mg delayed- release capsules. However the 30mg tablet or capsule will be available only on prescription.
Prevacid is the fourth best selling brand drug in the US. It has been used for heartburn and has overcome Prilosec which is nothing but omeprazole. The over the counter drugs are relatively cheaper when compared to the prescribed ones.
Prevacid OTC comes in strengths of 15mg tablet and capsule. It should be used once daily only in the morning before meals. Before taking any OTC drug it is the responsibility of the consumer to have a thorough knowledge of the drug. Prevacid OTC is no exception to this.
Prevacid OTC is a PPI drug as already mentioned. It blocks the proton pumps in the stomach which are responsible for acid secretion thus reducing the concentration of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. This in turn helps in relieving the discomfort caused by gastric ulcers, GERD and duodenal ulcers.
Prevacid OTC has some of the common side effects as of any other drug like nausea, headache, constipation and diarrhea. However if the side effects are severe it is advisable to consult a doctor. The drug should not be taken along with sucralfate as it may interfere with its absorption. Sucralfate should be taken only half an hour after the intake of Prevacid.
Prevacid OTC should be kept out of reach of children and it should be stored in a clean, cool, dry place.
