Prevacid
Prevacid is the trade name of Lansoprazole. Lanzoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). The proton pump inhibitors reduce the gastric secretions and are used in the treatment of gastric ulcers.
The mechanism of action of the drug is by irreversibly blocking the hydrogen- potassium adenosine triphosphate enzyme system of the gastric parietal cell. The lack of acid production in the stomach helps in the healing of duodenal ulcers. But this can cause hypochlorhydria, the lack of sufficient hydrochloric acid. The plasma elimination half life is 1.5 hours. The effect of the drug last for more than 24 hours.
The indications of Prevacid are duodenal ulcers, H. pylori eradication to reduce recurrence of duodenal ulcer, benign gastric ulcer, NSAID associated gastric ulcer, gastro esophageal reflux disease. It can be used for both pediatric and adult patient.
The conditions where Prevacid should be used cautiously are pregnancy and in nursing mothers.
There are generally lesser drug interactions. But it should be taken 30 minutes before taking sucralfate. However some of the other drugs are ampicillin, clopidogrel, digoxin, ketoconazole, warfarin, iron and theophylline.
The drug Prevacid is available as 15 mg and 30mg tablet and capsule. It is also available as extended release tablets. It should be taken once daily before food. The tablet should not be swallowed or chewed. It should be kept under the tongue and it generally dissolves within a minute. For those who are not able to take the drug as prescribed can mix the tablet or the contents of the capsule in a glass of apple or orange juice. It can also be administered via Ryles or the nasogastric tube. Even if you miss a dose you need not double the dose the next time.
The general side effects of Prevacid are headache, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea and constipation.
